The transect comprises out of 17 sites, from sea level at Lamberts bay, up against the Western slopes, across the summit of Sneeukop (the 3rd highest peak in the Cederberg), down the Eastern slopes towards the Karoo, with the last site at Wupperthal. The sites differ 200 meters in altitude from the next, and each site consists of 4 grids approximately 200 meters apart, with 10 pitfall traps 10 meters apart each. This is a total of 680 pitfall traps.en
The Coast to Karoo Transect in the Cederberg investigates the abundance and species diversity of ants and beetles along the altitudinal line. Currently more than 90 species have been recorded. It is a long term project that aims to show some changes with Climate Change. This Project was started by A. Botes and S.L. Chown in 2002 for Botes' PhD, and data has been collected by the CIB staff since 2005.en

Earlier years (up to 2004) data had less vegetation catagories than later years. Please compare datasets before use. Different observers might have a slightly different style of taking measurements. Pitfalls do not occur in the exact same spot as previous years, only approximate, thus you can not compare pitfalls to each other, only averages to averages for Grids.en

Dataset were started by Antoinette Botes as a PhD in 2002 till 2004. Thereafter the staff of the CIB did all collections. All original data that was typed in straight from field data sheets, which is stored in room 3029 Life Sciences with Suzaan Kritzinger-Klopper, and a copy is kept in room 3075 with Erika Nortje.en
